Troubleshooting

The finished cut drags

Nothing happens in the first seconds, the middle over-explains, and viewers swipe away before the climax.

Why it happens
  • The script opens with backstory, so there's no anomaly or question in the first 3 seconds.
  • Most shots are people standing and talking, with no new information or action.
  • Every generated clip is kept in full, including the slow frames at its start and end.
How to fix it
Put the protagonist's worst moment or the biggest anomaly in the first shot.
Cut explanations the audience already has, and turn long dialogue into action, props or reaction shots.
Check the script for a new piece of information, action or emotional shift every 3–5 seconds.
In the edit, trim the static frames and dead pauses at the head and tail of every clip.
Read the script aloud with a timer and cut lines that don't push the conflict until it fits.
Before and after
Fails
Lin Xia works the night shift at a convenience store. Her sister went missing three years ago. That night, she went to work as usual…
Works
2:13 a.m. A new order pops up. The recipient is her sister, missing for three years.
Prevent it next time:Before locking the script, check three things: an anomaly in the first 3 seconds, a change every 3–5 seconds, and a payoff or hook at the end.
